It’s very difficult campaigning in a time of lockdown! No more street stalls, no more leafletting, no more packed halls where we can all get together over tea and biscuits after an interesting talk – but at least the interesting talks have continued. From Easter through to the summer holidays, we have had a succession of speakers via Zoom so we have been able to keep in touch virtually. We hope to continue this programme over the following months. The Steering Group is still meeting every month to assess tactics…

June 2020 Stratford4Europe Joins the European Movement
Many of our supporters already have individual membership of the European Movement but in June, Stratford4Europe decided to affiliate as an organisation, effectively becoming a branch of the European Movement. This will give us a number of advantages such as being able to advertise our events over the EM network and having access to shared campaign materials. In addition, it will provide a data service for the secure storage of our supporter details (eg. names and email addresses) to accord with the General Data Protection Requirements. The European Movement is…
June 2020 – Electoral Pact and Voting Reform
In June the Steering Group of Stratford for Europe met with the three parliamentary candidates who represented the opposition parties in the General Election in December 2019, Felix Ling (Labour) Dave Passingham (Green) and Dominic Skinner (Lib Dem). The intention was to explore how different parties could be brought together by a common cause to support electoral reform. It was a good discussion conducted respectfully and with an obvious desire to hear the points of view of others. It highlighted a lot of positives as well as some serious challenges…

Brendan Donnelly: The Resistance Continues
Thank you to Brendan Donnelly of the The Federal Trust for Education & Research for an entertaining and uplifting evening offering hope and optimism. “Nothing could be more damaging to Johnson’s credibility and that of his government than a pitiless comparison between the real results of the Brexit negotiations this year and the claims regularly made by and on Johnson’s behalf about Brexit since 2016. The Rejoin Coalition will have in 2020 a wide-open goal of devastating comparison between Brexit fantasy and Brexit reality.” https://fedtrust.co.uk/brexit-rejoiners-must-learn-from-their-mistakes/ For those of you unable…
Post General Election Statement
December 2019 Following the general election we recognise the inevitability that Brexit will now happen. However, since more than 50% of the electorate voted for one of the progressive parties, we feel we have a strong mandate, if needed, for our campaign to continue. We are determined it should. Central to the new phase of our campaign will be to hold the government and our local MP to account by scrutinising their every word and action. At the same time we will do everything we can to promote the positive…
General Election 2019 Statement
In brief, recognising that the 2019 general election may now be our only chance of keeping the UK in the EU, we have taken the decision to urge our supporters to follow the combined tactical voting evidence from three pro-remain websites: People’s Vote, Best for Britain and Remain United. The current advice from these is that the best chance we have of electing a pro-remain candidates in Stratford and our nearest neighbouring constituencies is to vote for: Dominic Skinner (Liberal Democrat) in Stratford-on-Avon Matt Western (Labour) in Warwick and Leamington Richard Dickson (Liberal…

Michael Dougan, back to Stratford once again, gave a blistering talk on Friday night. Well worth listening to an expert’s overview of May’s Withdrawal Agreement, Johnson’s Worse Deal and the implications going forward for Northern Ireland and the UK. Plus we’ve got guidance notes!
