What Has The EU Ever Done For Us (in Stratford)?

Contrary to Councillor Juliet Short’s statement made via a live Washington Post Facebook stream that “the EU has never given Stratford-upon-Avon any money”, Stratford4Europe would beg to differ. The total funding given to Warwickshire from the EU is listed on the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership website. This was 36m euros for the European Structural Investment Fund and £2.7m for the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development for 2014 – 2020. Tracking down exactly which projects received EU funding can be difficult as many projects receive matched funding and…

100,000 Gather To Unite For Europe March in London

On Saturday, March 25th, 2017, a hundred strong representation of Stratford4Europe made their way to London to join a peaceful demonstration of solidarity with Europe and to show their concern for the future of the UK out of the EU.  As a policeman jokingly observed, it was the “politest march ever”. “I’m British. I’m on a march. Things must be bad.” read one placard, “Brits Don’t Quit” said another. The march coincided with EU leaders gathering to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. The…

Stratford-on-Avon “Unite for Europe” March on Parliament

STRATFORD-ON-AVON DELEGATION TO MARCH ON PARLIAMENT On Saturday 25th March, a 60 strong delegation from the Stratford District will travelling down to London by coach to represent Stratford-on-Avon on the ‘Unite for Europe National March to Parliament’.  A similar number of residents will also be journeying down under their own steam and meeting up in Park Lane.  It is estimated that this will be largest contingent from Stratford ever to take part in a national demonstration. EU Citizens Make Vital Contributions

Letter published in the Stratford Herald on Thursday, 8th March, 2017 Dear Editor, Stratford-on-Avon District is home to around 5,000 European Union citizens or ‘expats’ from our 27 EU partner countries. With over 85% in employment, higher than the UK average, EU citizens make a vital contribution to our local economy and our community. EU workers play an essential role in our NHS and hard-pressed social care services, they ensure that our farmers can get their food to market, and many work in the catering and hospitality sectors that are…

Stratford Herald: Two hundred at pro-EU group launch

A LEADING academic has urged a pro-EU group in Stratford to end Brexit, writes Matthew Snape. Stratford4Europe held its first public meeting at Stratford School on Wednesday, 1st March, when Professor Anthony Clifford Grayling insisted that volunteers ‘stop Brexit and keep Britain in the European Union’. He said that last year’s referendum result was advisable and not binding, arguing that the Leave campaign produced ‘bogus claims’ that misinformed people. Describing the European Union as magnificent, he said that he is ‘proud that Britain shares its history with famous Europeans like Einstein’. The…

S4E Launch Welcomes A C Grayling

‘FIGHTING FOR EUROPE!’ On 1st March, 2017, Stratford4Europe received a fantastic launch when more than 200 people came to hear an address by Professor A.C. Grayling, a well known academic and writer who campaigns against Brexit. He often contributes well-researched articles to ‘The New European’ newspaper but on this occasion he came to Stratford to explain his views in person. He told us why the referendum did not give the government a legitimate mandate to take Britain out of Europe. He said the electorate was gerrymandered to exclude many who…
